Walmart to Accept SA8000 in Its Responsible Sourcing Program

7 April 2017

The multinational retailing corporation Walmart has announced it will begin to accept the SA8000®Standard as one of the eight currently approved social compliance programs in its Responsible Sourcing Program in mid-2017.

SA8000 certification is available for any industry and anywhere in the world. It drives the highest standards of social performance, benefiting both workers and business interests. The Standard is currently used in over 3800 facilities in 68 countries and 55 industries. It represents a three-year cycle of capacity building and implementation of performance standards and management systems.

“SA8000 provides a single solution for suppliers regardless of industry and thus can help them reach significant savings in auditing costs,” says Rochelle Zaid, Senior Director at SAI. “We are pleased to learn about Walmart’s decision to utilize third-party compliance programs. It gives all parties the opportunity to dedicate increasing resources to capacity building, which we find a critical component of any compliance program,” Zaid adds.

SA8000 is recognized by hundreds of retailers and brands around the world, including by global corporations such as The Walt Disney Company, HP, and Eileen Fisher. Several governments and multi-lateral agencies have created incentive programs specifically recognizing companies with an accredited SA8000 certification.
