Steven Oates

Steven Oates serves as Senior Advisor, providing content expertise and strategic advice on key labor and human rights issues for SAI's standards and capacity building programs. He represents SAI at international forums such as the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, International Labor Conference, and UN Global Compact Advisory Group on Labor and Human Rights. Mr. Oates is an English solicitor by profession, and currently consults on international labor standards; corporate social responsibility; human rights; social and labor rights at work and in development; gender equality; economic and social rights and globalization. 

Previously, Mr. Oates was the Senior Adviser on Rights at Work in the office of the ILO Executive Director for Standards, and also served as the regional adviser on labor standards in Africa. He has long experience in supervision of the application of standards in the ILO, with a special interest in employment policy instruments.  His work has been aimed at obtaining better implementation of standards through cooperation in the field, work with IFIs and CSR.  He has studied at Moscow, Tokyo and Harvard universities.
